The new Audi Q5 SUV debuts

Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 SUV has been a popular choice in the midsize SUV segment for over 15 years. Now, Audi is introducing the third generation of this bestseller, featuring a more modern and dynamic design than ever before. The new Q5 is the first SUV model based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).

It comes with petrol and diesel engines that are more economical thanks to MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) plus technology. Gernot Döllner, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, said, “The Audi Q5 has been our most successful and important SUV model in the midsize class for more than 15 years. The new edition is a further development of its proven characteristics.”

The new Q5 offers a dynamic design, high variability, and a modern infotainment and operation concept.

Customizable digital light signatures and modern driver assistance systems enhance the driving experience. The sporty Audi SQ5 complements the new model series at its premiere. Future models with plug-in hybrid technology are expected to join the lineup.

The first generation of the Q5 debuted in 2008 and has dominated the premium brand segment since then. The latest Q5 is based on the PPC, which allows Audi to bring high-volume models with high technical standards to different segments. The new Q5 is manufactured in San José Chiapa, Mexico.

The proximity to the North American market is an important factor for Audi. The new Q5 boasts a spacious interior with ample head and legroom. The fully adjustable rear seat allows for increased trunk volume or greater comfort for rear passengers.

With the rear seats folded down, the transport volume increases to up to 1,473 liters, depending on the model variant. The exterior design of the third generation Q5 is even sportier with perfect proportions. A high shoulder line creates a powerful silhouette, connecting the front and rear lights and making the vehicle appear longer.

The front of the vehicle features a sporty, wide Singleframe flanked by vertical, functional air curtains, and sculpturally shaped headlights that create a sharp, focused look. The rear design is sleek and uncluttered, dominated by a three-dimensional shaped light strip that runs across the entire width of the vehicle. Audi has officially unveiled the all-new third-generation Audi SQ5, restoring the favored V6 petrol power while bidding adieu to the previous V6 TDI.

This updated model boasts a 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, generating an impressive 362bhp and 406lb ft of torque. The powertrain is complemented by Audi’s renowned quattro four-wheel-drive system and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. From the exterior, the new SQ5 presents a muscular and sharp design with purposeful enhancements.

The front end features a gloss black ‘singleframe’ grille, large air intakes, and sophisticated OLED headlights, integrated more cohesively into the design. The rear is marked by traditional quad exhausts and a redesigned diffuser, along with signature rear OLED lights. Audi has put considerable effort into refining the aerodynamics of the SQ5 and the regular Q5, improving airflow efficiency.

Optional engine choices include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 201bhp and 250lb ft of torque, and a 2.0-litre diesel delivering 201bhp and 295lb ft of torque.

Both options feature the quattro system with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and the ‘MHEV Plus’ hybrid system, enhancing both efficiency and performance with electric motors and a small 1.7kWh battery.

Inside, the shift is significant, with the SQ5 and Q5 moving away from a button-heavy interior to larger touchscreens. The driver enjoys an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit, while the central 14.5-inch panoramic MMI screen offers an improved user interface. An optional 10.9-inch screen is available for the passenger.

Additional features include diamond-quilted seats, an ambiance-enhancing Bang & Olufsen audio system, and better insulation for a quieter cabin. The Audi Q5 SUV series stands as a symbol of beauty and prowess in the automotive world. Known for its balanced aesthetics and impressive proportions, the Q5 has always distinguished itself as a confident and timeless vehicle.

Contributing to this legacy, the wheel designs play a significant role in its overall appeal. Designer Andreas Valencia Pollex has been instrumental in shaping the wheel lineup for the latest Audi Q5. Valencia Pollex explains that the design process begins with a deep understanding of the vehicle.

The various wheel designs for the new Q5 aim to balance form and function. “The new Q5 should simultaneously fit in with the refreshing elegance and straightforwardness of the car, but also differentiate it. It’s a fine line.

Our approach was to emphasize the symmetry in the spoke design. For a long time, we developed very extroverted wheel designs – now we’re moderating the tone again,” Valencia Pollex notes. The Audi Q5 wheel lineup is notably diverse to meet the varied demands of its customers.

The 17-inch silver wheels posed the biggest challenge: “With an aero cover for this entry-level wheel, we managed to combine advantages from both worlds: good aerodynamics and light weight.” For those looking for something more, Audi offers robust, sporty, and combinations of both in wheels 19 inches and above. For instance, the Q5 features a powerful 20-inch five-spoke wheel and a dynamic five-double-spoke wheel. Among the most expressive wheels is the forged 21-inch S-design wheel, available in a high-gloss version with elements in neodymium silk matte finish.

Wheel design is about more than looks; it’s strategic. “Form always has to follow function – because we want to deliver technically outstanding products to our customers. Wheels are a product of this interplay,” says Valencia Pollex.

This approach explores the limits of modern aesthetics and aims to tell a story. For example, the first-generation Q5 wheels had prominent notches, a design cue Valencia Pollex revisited in the 19-inch version for the new Q5. Design quality and longevity are paramount.

“Even after 300,000 kilometers, the wheels still have to function and look good,” Valencia Pollex emphasizes. Good design is a blend of craft, feelings, and passion, driven by a few strict rules to ensure timelessness and quality in the final product. Through smart design choices and innovative visions, Audi ensures that the wheels do indeed make the car – combining aesthetics, functionality, and a touch of storytelling to continue the Q5’s legacy.
