Tesla Cybertruck recall for delayed rearview image

Cybertruck Recall

Tesla has issued a recall for 27,185 of its 2024 Cybertruck vehicles due to a problem with the rearview camera image. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated the recall, stating that the rearview camera image may be delayed after shifting into reverse. This flaw causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

To fix this issue, Tesla has released a software update that will correct the delayed camera feed problem and ensure the affected vehicles meet safety regulations. The recall highlights the importance of prompt and accurate feedback from vehicle safety systems to enhance driver awareness and prevent potential accidents. Tesla is urging owners of the impacted Cybertruck models to apply the software update as soon as possible to rectify the issue.

The recall affects most Cybertrucks in the U.S. and is the largest to date for the electric truck.

The electric-vehicle maker began deliveries of the Cybertruck in November 2023, following a two-year delay caused by production problems and battery-supply constraints.

Tesla Cybertruck recall details

Tesla has not disclosed specific production or delivery numbers for the Cybertruck.

According to a report filed with the NHTSA, Tesla explained that the Cybertruck’s system in the affected vehicles might not complete a shutdown process before being commanded to boot up. This results in a delay in displaying the rear-view image, which may not appear within two seconds of placing the vehicle in reverse.

In some instances, the display may appear blank for up to six to eight seconds when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Tesla said it identified the issue early last month and has implemented the software fix in all Cybertrucks currently in production. This recall is the latest setback for the futuristic-looking Cybertruck, which has experienced several delays in production.

Despite the recall, Tesla reported that it produced approximately 470,000 vehicles and delivered around 463,000 vehicles in the third quarter of 2024. The company did not disclose how many Cybertrucks were included in these figures. Tesla will release its third-quarter financial results on October 23, 2024.
