The survey, which included 576 respondents from various sectors such as gaming, media, automotive, and manufacturing, also identified collaboration and time for innovation as significant hurdles. Over a third of the participants found collaboration difficult, with moving large files being a more significant barrier than remote working.

The report also highlighted the importance of access to senior leadership (90%) and the ability to work remotely (81%). In addition to funding, the lack of talent and aggressive timelines were named as major obstacles hindering the innovative capabilities of game developers.

Funding challenges in game development

Interestingly, the report found that over 50% of respondents use game engines like Unity and Unreal for projects outside the gaming industry, with a third of those surveyed not working in the video game industry at all. This trend underscores the versatility and innovative potential of game development tools in tackling challenges across different markets. The use of AI tools is also on the rise among developers, with over 65% of those polled integrating these technologies into their workflows.

ChatGPT emerged as the most popular AI tool, utilized by 47% of the respondents. Perforce’s findings provide a comprehensive look at the landscape of game development, highlighting the industry’s ongoing struggles with funding, collaboration, and innovation, while also showcasing the broader applications of game development technologies.
