offline navigation now available on Wear OS

Offline Navigation

Google Maps for Wear OS is getting an update that will allow users to access maps offline. This means that people can use the app for navigation even when they don’t have an internet connection. The update will automatically download maps to the smartwatch when it is connected to Wi-Fi and charging.

This is done to save battery life. Users can manage or delete the downloaded maps right from their watch. They can also use a bigger screen to control the maps in more detail.

The offline maps feature is coming out in version 11.140.0701.W of Google Maps for Wear OS. It was first reported by people using the Maps beta version. But it should be available on all Wear OS smartwatches soon.

Google Maps will download the map for your current area on its own.

It will also sync any maps you already downloaded on your phone.

This will only happen when the watch is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. This helps avoid draining the battery. Users can see how much space each downloaded map takes up.

They can easily delete them if they want to free up space. When using offline maps, a slashed cloud icon will show up at the top of the watch screen next to the time. This lets you know the device is in offline mode.

While not a huge change, this feature will make using Google Maps on Wear OS more convenient. With offline maps rolling out, Wear OS watches are getting closer to offering the same navigation features as phones. If you ever wanted to try using Google Maps on your Wear OS watch without needing your phone, you’ll be able to do that soon.
