Manipur extends mobile internet ban till September 20

Internet Ban

The state government of Manipur has extended the ban on mobile internet services in five districts until September 20. The decision was made after reviewing the current law and order situation and the potential impact of internet services on public safety. The ban affects the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.

The Commissioner (Home) issued a statement explaining that the suspension of internet and mobile data services, including VSATs and VPN services, will continue for another five days from 3:00 pm on September 15 until 3:00 pm on September 20. Despite the mobile internet suspension, the state government has conditionally lifted the broadband service (ILL and FTTH) suspension, allowing these services to operate under certain terms and conditions. Authorities are concerned about the spread of disinformation and false rumors through social media, which could potentially lead to the mobilization of agitators and result in violent activities.

Manipur continues internet service suspension

The Home department stated that the control mechanisms for such disturbances are still inadequate. Earlier, the curfew was relaxed in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, and Thoubal districts from 5am to 12 noon, allowing residents to buy essential items like medicines and food.

People rushed to markets around Imphal, and long queues were seen at ATM booths due to the impact of the mobile internet ban on online transactions. The curfew was imposed in response to widespread student protests demanding government action against ongoing violence in the state. Manipur has been experiencing unrest since a rally turned violent in May last year, resulting in over 200 deaths and the displacement of more than 50,000 people, many of whom are currently living in relief camps.

The authorities have emphasized that essential service personnel are exempted from the curfew beyond the period of relaxation.
