Google Pixel 9 adds AI call transcription

Pixel Transcription

The upcoming Google Pixel 9 is rumored to feature advanced AI capabilities, including a system for recording, transcribing, and summarizing phone calls. This new feature, possibly called “Call Notes,” might be integrated into Google’s Phone app. All processing will be done on-device, ensuring user privacy.

According to insider Dylan Roussel, the “Call Notes” feature aims to build on the capabilities of Google’s existing Recorder app, which already handles recording and transcription of conversations. The Pixel 9 series is expected to utilize the Gemini Nano AI model for these tasks, building on the groundwork laid by the Pixel 8 series. In addition to the new call recording and transcribing features, the Pixel 9 series might also introduce a redesigned Panorama mode.

This update is in response to feedback following the removal of the Photo Sphere feature in the Pixel 8.

Pixel 9’s AI call notes

Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 9 series in August, a month ahead of its usual schedule.

While hardware specs are always a point of interest, the emphasis this time is on the software updates driven by AI. The competition in the call recording and transcription space is heating up, with Apple’s iOS 18 expected to offer similar features, including live call recording and transcription with clear user notifications. Apple’s feature will support multiple languages.

This competitive landscape suggests that Google will implement robust privacy and transparency measures for its “Call Notes” feature. While these rumors and leaks hint at exciting features for the Pixel 9 series, nothing has been confirmed yet. We will have to wait for Google’s official announcement in August to know for sure what new innovations will be included in its latest flagship smartphones.
