Google introduces call casting, internet sharing

Call Casting

Google is rolling out a new update for Android that makes it easier to transfer calls and share Wi-Fi hotspots between multiple devices. The devices need to be close by and all signed into the same Google account. The update was initially announced at the end of May during Google’s developer conference.

It is now making its way to users’ devices. If your phone has received the update, you can go to Settings and select Google > Devices and sharing > Cross-device services. This setup will allow you to configure a device group to share calls and hotspots.

The group can include tablets and Chromebooks. This feature is similar to Apple’s Handoff. Handoff enables users to pass calls, files, and more between iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Google’s new feature aims to offer comparable functionality.

Google’s device interoperability update

Call casting is part of the new update.

It allows users to “move calls between this device and other nearby devices signed in to your Google account.” Currently, this feature requires the use of Google Meet. Other apps may integrate this functionality in the future. The instant hotspot feature in the update lets users “automatically share hotspot access with your own devices.” This includes Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks.

It eliminates the need to manually input passwords. Google says the internet sharing feature isn’t available on all devices yet. There is a similar feature on Galaxy phones called auto-hotspot that can be used in the meantime.

This update is a big move for Google. It seeks to enhance the interoperability of its devices, like what Apple users have enjoyed for years. The full rollout of this update is expected within the next month.
