Garmin Fenix 8 review: vibrant OLED options debut

Fenix OLED

The Garmin Fenix 8 is the latest addition to Garmin’s flagship line of GPS watches. It brings a host of new features and improvements over its predecessor, the Fenix 7 Pro. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of OLED screen options.

The Fenix 8 now comes in both OLED and MIP (Memory-In-Pixel) screen variants. The OLED models offer vibrant colors and sharp visuals, while the MIP versions prioritize battery life, especially when used in bright sunlight conditions. Speaking of battery life, the Fenix 8 boasts longer-lasting power compared to the Fenix 7 Pro.

The 47mm MIP model can now last up to 21 days on a single charge, or 28 days with solar charging. The 51mm MIP version takes it even further, offering up to 48 days of use with solar power. Garmin has also added a microphone and speaker to the Fenix 8.

This enables hands-free calling, interaction with digital assistants, and even music playback directly from the watch. The offline voice assistant can be used for setting timers, alarms, and more. Another significant upgrade is the Fenix 8’s dive capability.

Vibrant OLED screen options introduced

With 40m water resistance, it is now suitable for deeper water activities, bringing it closer to Garmin’s dedicated Descent series of dive watches. To accommodate this, the buttons have been changed to non-clicky, leak-proof inductive ones.

The flashlight on the Fenix 8 is brighter than its predecessor. It is adjustable and includes a red LED option to help maintain night vision in dark environments. On the software side, the Fenix 8 introduces an improved notifications interface and enhanced map-based navigation with route recalculation.

Some of these features may eventually make their way to the Fenix 7 Pro via updates, but not all. Overall, the Garmin Fenix 8 incorporates features from various Garmin product lines. The OLED screen from the Epix series and the dive capabilities from the Descent watches are notable examples.

For those who prioritize the vibrant OLED display and can manage the reduced battery life, the Fenix 8 OLED is a compelling choice. However, if extended battery life and solar charging are more important, the MIP screen models are the way to go. As always, pricing will play a role in the decision-making process.

The Fenix 8 carries a premium price tag, but discounts on older models like the Fenix 7 Pro may offer an attractive alternative for budget-conscious buyers.
