Gaming firms embrace AI for development

Gaming AI

The gaming industry is rapidly embracing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to streamline game development and create new revenue opportunities. Companies like Gaxos.ai, PlayStation, and Series Entertainment are leading the charge, while Nintendo stands apart with no immediate plans to incorporate AI into its game creation process. AI startup Gaxos.ai Inc.

has unveiled Gaxos Labs, a new AI-powered platform that combines proprietary technology with popular AI tools like Dall-E and Stability.ai. The suite includes an asset editor and Unity plugin to help developers rapidly create and manage AI-generated game content. A key feature allows players to generate custom in-game content in real-time, which could create a new revenue source by selling player-created cosmetic items.

Sony’s PlayStation division is also turning to AI and machine learning to accelerate game development and reduce costs. AI has already been implemented in recent projects, such as automating subtitle synchronization for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Sony is investing in volumetric capture technology to generate high-quality 3D assets across its divisions.

Series Entertainment, a startup developing AI-powered game creation tools, has secured $28 million in Series A funding from investors including Netflix, Dell Technologies Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz. The company’s main product, the Rho Engine, aims for comprehensive game development rather than specific tasks like bug catching or AI assistance. While the gaming industry rushes to embrace AI, Nintendo is charting its own course.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary game designer behind Mario and Zelda, recently confirmed that the company is not planning to use AI in game development.

Gaming industry adopts AI tools

This decision stands in stark contrast to the rest of the industry, where 62% of game studios already leverage AI technology.

Inworld AI, the creators of advanced AI-powered tools for gaming, recently gave developers an in-depth look into the future of game development during a 90-minute keynote presentation. The company announced new products and demos and facilitated detailed discussions with industry leaders from companies such as NVIDIA and Xbox. Inworld AI’s modular platform, known as Primitives, allows game developers to generate complex and context-aware behaviors that are more advanced than traditional scripted responses or game AI.

The platform supports diverse genres, enabling developers to create lifelike and dynamic experiences in both FPS and RPG games. Mobile developer Gaxos has also revealed a new suite of AI games development tools called Gaxos Labs. The platform integrates with several AI models, alongside plug-ins for Unity and Unreal, and aims to accelerate game development, enhance creativity, and increase revenue.

It provides guardrails for integrating AI-powered user-generated content (UGC) options into games, designed to speed up prototyping and streamline asset creation. The Gaxos Labs suite combines leading AI tools in a development environment for both content creation and real-time gamer interaction. It is customizable based on individual needs and offers a monthly membership fee, which includes credits for using the built-in AI models.

Developers can also plug in other familiar models using their API keys, with an additional micro fee. As the gaming industry continues to embrace AI, it remains to be seen how these tools will shape the future of game development and player experiences. While some companies are fully embracing the technology, others, like Nintendo, are taking a more cautious approach.
