Doe reveals 2024 distinguished Scientist fellows

The Department of Energy has announced the 2024 Office of Science Distinguished Scientist Fellows. Four top scientists have each been awarded $1 million in direct funding from this program. The awards are given to senior national laboratory scientists.

They aim to develop, sustain, and promote scientific and academic excellence through collaborations between universities and national laboratories. “It is an honor to recognize the outstanding research of these awardees,” said Harriet Kung, Acting Director of the DOE Office of Science. “They are advancing science solutions for the nation and addressing some of our biggest challenges.”

The 2024 DOE Distinguished Scientist Fellows are:

Mary Raafat Mikhail Bishai from Brookhaven National Laboratory.

She is honored for contributions in unraveling the fundamental properties of neutrinos and commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists. Lois Curfman McInnes from Argonne National Laboratory. She is recognized for exceptional accomplishments in innovative algorithms and software, and efforts to broaden participation in high-performance computing.

Doe announces 2024 laboratory scientist fellows

Kristin Persson from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She is celebrated for pioneering advancements in data-driven materials design and discovery that facilitate materials innovation globally.

Gerald A. Tuskan from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is acknowledged for foundational advances in the development of resilient bioenergy feedstock crops and support for the next generation of scientists.

The Fellows were chosen based on their outstanding scientific leadership, engagement with research communities, sustained scientific excellence, and commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Each Fellow will give an online public lecture in the coming months as part of the award. The lectures will take place between October 2024 and February 2025.
