Broken fiber optic cable disrupts Sitka connectivity

Broken Connectivity

A broken fiber optic cable has caused widespread internet and cellular outages in Sitka, Alaska, since last Thursday. The outages have affected much of the island’s connectivity. GCI, the primary internet and cell service provider for most Sitkans, is working to restore full service.

In an email to KCAW on Saturday, GCI Communications Manager Josh Edge reported that a fiber repair ship is en route to the site of the break. The ship is expected to arrive within five to six days. Edge said the repairs could take up to six days, depending on the complexity of the situation.

He assured that GCI is working diligently to restore service as quickly as possible. While GCI reported on Friday evening that some texting, calling, and internet capabilities had been partially restored, the service remains spotty and limited. Some Sitkans have been able to send texts and make calls in certain areas of town.

In the meantime, the Sitka Public Library has gone back online using satellite internet. The library is available for public use. It opened for extended hours this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library plans to return to regular business hours on Tuesday, September 3.

The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA) has loaned Starlink satellite equipment to the city. CCTHITA’s broadband department, Tidal Network, will install the equipment at the Sitka Public Library. This will provide immediate internet access for critical services and community use.

Christopher Cropley, Tidal Network’s director, emphasized that installations will prioritize community needs.

This will enable institutions such as the Coast Guard, hospital, and library to maintain essential operations.

“We’re doing this in a triage style,” Cropley said, ensuring urgent requirements are met first. The internet outage has significantly impacted daily life in Sitka. Many local businesses have switched to cash-only transactions due to the inability to process credit cards.

Residents are relying on shared connections through Starlink service. Landline communications remain unaffected, and emergency 911 services are operational. However, elective surgeries at Mt.

Edgecumbe Medical Center have been canceled. The facility is diverting emergency patients from outside communities. Urgent prescriptions are being prioritized as the hospital manages with limited internet access.

Residents expressed their reliance on internet connectivity. They highlighted its growing importance in various facets of life, from everyday tasks to critical services. Former city administrator Mark Gorman reflected on the impact.

He noted the profound disruption caused by the outage and the sudden importance of alternatives like radio for information. Efforts are ongoing to mitigate the disruption and maintain connectivity for essential functions in Sitka. The community is navigating this significant challenge.
