The City of Monroe is set to undergo a significant technological upgrade as AT&T announces its expansion plans targeting under-served areas. According to Mayor Friday Ellis, the project has been in the works for the past two years and is now ready for implementation. “Addressing the needs of under-served areas has been our primary goal,” Mayor Ellis stated.
“This expansion will bring much-needed connectivity to various parts of the city, helping to bridge the digital divide.”
These efforts come at a critical time when reliable internet access has become increasingly essential for education, healthcare, and economic development. Community leaders and residents alike are optimistic about the positive impact this expansion will bring to Monroe. The project will involve a comprehensive evaluation of existing infrastructure to ensure minimal disruption to traffic, especially during major events in the city.
AT&T aims to provide comprehensive coverage throughout North and South Monroe. In addition to infrastructure improvements, AT&T plans to support the community through service projects, job fairs, digital literacy courses, and laptop giveaways in partnership with local organizations.
Expanding Monroe internet access
The expansion is part of a larger initiative by the City of Monroe to provide fiber internet access to all its citizens. The Monroe Broadband Initiative, a public-private partnership between the city and AT&T Louisiana, promises reliable high-speed internet to both residents and businesses within Monroe. The 27-million-dollar project will see the City of Monroe contributing two million dollars, while AT&T Louisiana will invest 25 million dollars.
The project is expected to take approximately three years and will be executed in phases. David J. Aubrey, President of AT&T Louisiana, emphasized the careful planning involved in the rollout, stating that the company’s goal is to ensure comprehensive coverage and support for the community.
As the first city in Louisiana to provide fiber internet access to all its citizens, Monroe is setting an example for enhanced connectivity and community support.
