Google announced today that the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 will receive the new Watch OS 5 operating system. The update will start rolling out to Pixel Watches currently running Watch OS 3.5 and Watch OS 4 beginning today. Users will get a notification on their devices as the update becomes available over the next week.

Watch OS 5 will bring several improvements, including better camera controls and support for Pixel Recorder. It will also have a grid-view app launcher, offering a more intuitive user interface. While early reports suggested that Watch OS 5 would improve battery life, Google did not confirm if the update would extend the battery performance of older devices.

The recently released Pixel Watch 3, which runs on Watch OS 5, impressed many with its solid battery performance and other upgrades over last year’s Pixel Watch 2. With this update, Google continues to improve the functionality and user experience of its Pixel smartwatch lineup, competing closely with other leading smartwatches like Samsung’s Galaxy Watch series. The most notable addition is the Recorder app, initially exclusive to the Pixel Watch 3.

This app allows users to record audio directly from their wrist and access a transcript on their phone. However, this feature does require a Pixel phone. Other updates include improved camera controls and a new grid-view app launcher.

Wear OS 5 update features released

The grid view offers a more efficient way to navigate through apps compared to the previous list format. The rollout will occur in phases, depending on the carrier and device, and is expected to continue throughout the week.

So, if you don’t see the update immediately, there’s no need to worry. This development follows the recent launch of the Pixel Watch 3 and a subsequent price reduction for the Pixel Watch 2 by $100. The updated price makes the Pixel Watch 2 a more affordable option, now $100 less than both its original price and the new Pixel Watch 3.

There are also reports of the Pixel Watch 2 being available at significantly reduced prices at select retail locations. For instance, some Target stores have the Pixel Watch 2 on clearance for as low as $75. However, this offer appears to vary by location and may not be available at all stores.

Even if you can’t find the Pixel Watch 2 at such a low price in your area, other opportunities to save are emerging, including potential trade-in deals that offer up to $120 off. Additionally, Target Circle Card members can save an extra 5%. In conclusion, this Wear OS 5 upgrade is a welcome development for Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 users, effectively extending the lifespan and capabilities of their devices.

As always, keep an eye out for the best deals if you’re in the market for a new smartwatch.
